Another Netbook in the Mix: The Sylvania G Netbook Meso
The Sylvania G Netbook Meso is basically just another option among all of the netbooks already on the market. It doesn’t stand out much at all, providing similar features to those found from ASUS or Acer. The 8.9-inch LCD screen and the Intel Atom N270 do little to differentiate it from other netbooks.
The operating system on the Netbook Meso is one of the few unique features, as it runs a version of the Ubuntu Linux OS, specially designed for smaller netbook products. Being both extremely easy to use and highly intuitive, making it easy to learn, people new to the Linux system need not be afraid of this non-windows PC. It is also quite visually appealing, and provides excellent performance, despite the slightly longer boot times.
The 80GB hard drive may not seem to different from other netbooks on the market, but this is larger than many of the solid state drives available with other Linux netbooks. Although this makes it slightly less shock resistant, the increase in memory is a welcome addition to this otherwise fairly average netbook.
The keyboard is one of the downsides to the g Netbook Meso. Compared to similar 8.9-inch netbooks, the cramped layout of this keyboard makes it difficult to use over any extended periods of time. Moreover, the absence of a right shift key can make it rather awkward to use, and although the trackpad is fairly decent, the buttons are rather noisy and can seem rather disturbing when used in low-noise environments.
